For this SPL User Story we met sound engineer Florian Schober (Toneblasphemy) at the AUDIOMEISTEREI – his studio in Viersen, Germany. In addition to music and voice recordings, audio book productions, audio restorations and film dubbing, Florian also offers mixing and especially mastering of music productions there. In his setup there are several SPL devices. Find out within this story why he chose analog outboard equipment and how he’s using it.

What do you personally think is the biggest advantage of analog outboard equipment in mastering?
A completely analog mastering chain is very important to me.
I’ve built this with many analog processors and almost entirely with SPL Mastering Series devices. It allows me to make decisions faster and easier, which has improved my workflow immensely.
What would you say are the most important characteristics of our 120V Technology within your workflow?
Thanks to the SPL 120V Technology, unwanted distortions within the sound image are a thing of the past. This is especially beneficial for music material with many low-frequency impulses, such as hip hop. This simply gives me more creative freedom, a seamlessly brilliant sound and, of course, unlimited headroom.
IRON
The SPL IRON mastering compressor is very versatile. I work with it completely musically, completely by ear. You can use it very softly, but also perform very extreme settings, which heavily influence sound structure and dynamics.
PQ
The SPL PQ is an excellent mastering equalizer. With the PQ I can boost or cut frequencies very precisely without distorting the sound image – which is extremely cool in mastering, because you can work in such a clean way.

M/S processing has always been very important to me. However, I kept having problems with my old M/S matrix, such as distortion in the sound image. As a result, I replaced my old M/S processor with the SPL Gemini M/S processor. Thanks to the SPL 120V Technology, these problems now belong to the past.
