Within the scope of this project, three utility rooms ought to be converted into high-quality and flexible sound processing and mastering rooms. The analog and digital processing of analog and digital sources, by different employees, demands a special requirement from these rooms and the equipment. Highest audio quality and intuitive workflow are often contrary to versatile signal routing and processing possibilities, though have been successfully reconciled here.
The three new mastering rooms combine the best of the digital and analog world. In this regard, the WDR particularly relies on equipment with SPL 120V technology.
The centerpiece of all three rooms is an SPL Multichannel Mastering Console. Besides the big SPL MMC2 console, two customized SPL MMC4 consoles are also used here.
For conversion between the analog and digital world, inter alia SPL Madison AD/DA converters are used. The final monitoring of digital sources takes place through SPL Mercury Mastering DA converters.
In addition to the MMC2, the big mastering control room also provides first-class analog processors. This working environment was now brought up to date with an IRON Mastering Compressor, a PQ Mastering Equalizer, a Gemini Mastering M/S Processor as well as an SPL Hermes Mastering Router.
The SPL Phonitor 2 headphone amplifier provides an additional monitoring option in reference quality for perfect monitoring via headphones.
“With this project, we managed to combine the very highest sound quality with the greatest versatility and intuitive workflow. With such a special and complex usage profile as we have here, this really was a challenge. The final result looks and sounds awesome!”
