“This is what a really successful upgrade looks like, and it’s not just merely fashionable. This makes the SPL MTC Mk2 an absolutely professional device for a wide range of audio workplaces.”
“For more than ten years, the SPL MTC was a solid constant in many studios – a functional monitor controller ‘Made in Germany’ with talkback, generous input and output selection, and exceptional routing options. The new version, SPL MTC MK2, does not change anything in principle – however, decisive features have been rethought, routings have been made more practical and the workflow has been made more straightforward. The new concept is also more stylish. Time for an update!”
Design and features:
“The size and feel of the controls is also successfully implemented. The switches are also pleasant to press. Their illumination is easy to see without going blind. By the way, the ‘small’ gain pots are slightly detented, while the big ‘main knob’ turns pleasantly creamy. The crossfeed also switches off completely out the signal path with relay clicking when you turn it to zero. Best of all, the talkback mic doesn’t sound like crap. Seriously, it sounds trivial, but this is hard to find: so far, no monitor controller has managed acceptable talkback mics for my ears!”
“Besides the premium talkback mic with ‘measurement mic condenser capsule,’ the SPL MTC Mk2 provides two headphone amps, which offer jointly adjustable crossfeed. This function simulates crosstalk, resulting in a pleasantly natural sound. Even long periods of working with headphones remain stress-free this way.”
“The outputs for three pairs of stereo speakers and additional subwoofer outs are again implemented with five XLR outputs and one pair of jacks. They are all controlled by the big potentiometer and there is also a dim function and mute for all speakers and another mute for the headphones.”
“Other features of the SPL MTC Mk2 are an L/R flip, a mono button ( mid signal) and the L phase inversion. If you activate the last two at the same time, they solo the side signal. All three functions are available to both the speakers and the producer headphone path.”
“In view of current monitoring situations in everyday DAW use and modern DSP mix solutions on the audio interface, this is a logical decision. All inputs and outputs can be used simultaneously – i.e. mixed – and not only heard exclusively.”
Conclusion:
“Four inputs and four outputs as well as two monitoring paths including separate headphone amplifiers – and finally a decent talkback signal! Everything is logically arranged, pleasantly big and nice to touch.”
“The headphone outputs also sounded very pleasant, transparent with a modern crisp and tight sound.”
“The old MTC was actually more of a tin box and a bit too complex. This really all makes sense, does not rattle nor vibrate even when tapped on it. And the SPL MTC Mk2 just looks great at the workplace. Sometimes it can all be so easy.”
