For this SPL User Story, we had the opportunity to visit audio engineer Andy Meyer. Andy has been working with artists such as Shinedown, Justin Timberlake, Mötley Crüe, Madonna or Rage Against The Machine – just to name a few. We visited him where he feels most comfortable: right at his impressive FOH. He uses a lot of SPL gear in his analog racks. Why does he rely on SPL and the 120V technology? Find out in the video.
Have fun watching!
How it all begun:
“I wanted a cool stereo – my parents never had one. I told myself I wanted to have the biggest, baddest stereo in the world, when I was a little kid. And guess what – I’ve got the biggest, baddest stereo in the world, every night.”
“I started using outboard gear on Mötley Crüe. I started adding preamps for guitar and for bass and that’s where it started to grow.”
SPL Gear:
“What do I love about SPL gear? It sounds amazing! You just turn it on and it sounds great.”
“I guess the 120V technology actually works. You just turn it on, you pass audio through it and it immediately has more depth and width and warmth. It is just a great sounding piece of gear.”
SPL Gemini:
“Let’s talk about the SPL Gemini. It’s a Mastering M/S Processor and I love having this for live use. What I do is I like to spread my mix depending on the venue or even song. I also use it in full-range, because sometimes you need break the system up a little bit – just to clean up a room. It’s a lot of fun to have!”
SPL PQ:
“The PQ is my Mastering EQ. And what I typically do with that is to add a little bit of air to the system and adding a little bit of upper mid – very wide – just to give the mix a little bit more energy. The beauty of this EQ is, you can do that in the upper mids and you’ll get energy but you won’t get harshness.”
SPL IRON:
“The IRON is the glue to the system. This is a wonderful, wonderful piece of gear. I’m just kind of tickling a little bit of compression and it’s awesome!”
SPL Mercury:
“The Mercury is my D to A converter. It’s a wonderful transparent, flexible D/A converter. You can really tailor it to the gain structure of your system. It’s transparent, it’s wonderful sounding and I love it.”
SPL Vitalizer:
“The Vitalizer – what I’m doing with that is, I’m adding a tiny bit drive to pull the vocal forward and I’m expanding the vocal bus. I spread this a little bit, just to push the effects out of the way to keep the vocals forward.”
SPL BiG:
“The BiG – I had it in many different places – but right now it’s currently on my acoustic group. I spread it a little bit and give it a little vibe with the BiG. The BiG just sounds fantastic and the acoustics sound wonderful going through that.”
