Watch the SPL DeS video by voice-over artist Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff on his Youtube channel “The Microphone Assassin” to see and hear the Dual-Band De-Esser in action. What do you think? Is the SPL DeS the best deesser for voice-over?
“Finding the right deesser for voice-over is absolutely essential. This is the SPL DeS 500 Series. Let’s talk about it!”
Have fun watching the video!
“When I found the SPL family of deessers and how they treat these syllables, by not just squashing it and eq-ing it out, but by hunting it down and phase reversing it and choking it out of its existence. It just snuffs it out. I love that! It is making my life so much better!”
“You’ve got this different parameters here. You got the Lo-S deessing and then you’ve got the Hi-S deessing and they are set at different thresholds, because everybody’s voice if different. What’s really cool here is you can turn each of these bands off or on.”
“What’s cool too is you have this voicing switch, which allows you to take the frequency of the Lo-S and raise the center frequency up where the Lo-S is to a higher frequency by switching it to the female voicing, which is better for high pitched voices.”
“It’s not a very difficult piece of equipment to use.”
“Getting it dialed in is pretty easy. I’ve never had this kind of luck with a plugin before. I’m usually just fussing with everything and I havent’t gotten a result that’s this natural sounding. So that’s why I love this.”
“I’ve been working with the SPL 500 series deesser for a week now on a bunch of commercials and stuff and I got to say that this is such a problem solver.”
“I suggest you take a long hard look at the SPL DeS, because there is a difference between deessing in the analog realm. In the analog realm you get something that is more dynamic, because the way that analog circuits react to audio. If you can get really smooth nice natural deessing before you convert it into digital you’re going to get a more pleasing sound.”
