On the HiFi-IFAs online platform, you’ll find an in-depth review of our active analog crossover, the SPL Crossover Mk2. External analog crossovers are a rare sight in the hi-fi world—and author Falk Visarius even owns the original version of the Crossover, allowing him to compare both devices in terms of features and sonic performance. The review provides a structured overview of real-world applications and offers a practical assessment of the sonic changes.
Build / First Impressions:
“The Crossover Mk2 retains the same MSRP as its predecessor, making the Mk2 even more attractive, as it significantly expands functionality in terms of application range.”
“Together with the new Phonos duo, the Crossover Mk2 introduces a new, SPL-typical design language: the continuously variable rotary controls remain round, while the stepped rotary switches now feature flattened, grippy surfaces.”
“The Crossover Mk2 does without VU meters—which I don’t miss functionally in operation—and instead makes good use of the freed-up space on the front panel.”
“What I particularly like is the new organization of the functions.”
In Practice:
“The special thing: it operates purely in analog, without switching to digital. At the price of its predecessor, the Mk2 carries forward the legacy of the first generation and has been significantly upgraded in terms of functionality, with crossover frequencies for low-pass and high-pass now extending up to 3,600 Hz. This makes it possible not only to manage woofers, subwoofers, and the like, but also systems with higher crossover points. The adjustment options of the crossover allow for clean, seamless transitions between channels with a high degree of homogeneity. At the same time, the active crossover opens up interesting possibilities per channel when choosing amplifiers, which can now be connected via RCA in addition to XLR.”
“This expands the Mk2’s range of applications, as it can now also serve as an alternative to an (internal) passive crossover in stereo loudspeaker concepts.”
Sound:
“The difference was clearly audible in terms of improved dynamics and a more present soundstage.”
“The sonic presentation feels noticeably more mature and effortless.”
“Speakers and subwoofer play as a single unit, reproducing the music as one cohesive whole.”
Conclusion:
“As an external active crossover, Crossover Mk2 is a high-fidelity specialist that lives up to the Professional Fidelity Series in every respect.”
“Hi-fi enthusiasts who enjoy experimenting, along with users of specialized systems, will find the Crossover Mk2 to be a high-quality, highly versatile device.”
